Cape Otway Lighthouse 4 - VIC (PB00 5691)

Keywords: Cape Otway Lighthouse 4 - VIC (PB00 5691)3233 Apollo Bay

After several tragic shipwrecks, the "old" Cape Otway Lighthouse was built in 1848. It is the oldest lighthouse in Victoria. Together with the Cape Wickam Lighthouse on King Island, this lighthouse marks the entrance to Bass Strait, and was often the first land that ships would see after months and 20,000 kilometres after leaving England. The lighthouse was constructed from local sandstone and shone 48 kilometres out to sea. A new solar powered fully automated beacon was positioned directly in front of the sandstone lighthouse, and replaced the "old Light" in 1994.
