Cape Bruny - Bruny Island - TAS (PB00 5309)

Keywords: Cape Bruny - Bruny Island - TAS (PB00 5309) Lighthouse Mt Barren D'Entrecasteaux Channel Cloudy Bay South Bruny Island Great Taylors Bay

Due to many shipwrecks to the South and West of Bruny Island, one of which was the "Georgwe 111" with 130 lives lost, it was decided to build a lighthouse on Cape Bruny. The lighthouse was commenced in 1836, built entirely by convicts and constructed from local stone. Completed in 1838 the original light was fuelled by sperm oil. Some years later it was converted to kerosene and eventually generated electricity. The top of the lighthouse is 339ft above sea level and the tower is 44ft high. Until it was decomissioned Cape Bruny Lighthouse was the oldest manned lighthouse in Australia. Recently I met Tony Parsey, the second last official head-keeper at Cape Bruny Lightstation. We had great conversations about the various lights around Tasmania and mainland Australia. I was also fortunate enough to purchase a scale model of Cape Bruny Lighthouse from him.
