Smokey Cape Lighthouse - NSW (PB00 1661)

Keywords: Smokey Cape Lighthouse - NSW (PB00 1661) South West Rocks

The Smokey Cape Lighthouse at South West Rocks has an unusual octagonal tower, and was one of the last lighthouses to be designed for architectural excellence. Smokey Cape was named by Captain Cook because of the great amount of smoke from Aboriginal burn-off fires on the headland. The lighthouse was completed and first exhibited in 1891. The apparatus consisted of a first order lantern and lens system that is still in use today. It was converted to mains electricity in 1962 and it is believed the light was automated in 1988. It has since been demanned.
