Swan Island - TAS (PB00 5171)

Keywords: Swan Island - TAS (PB00 5171) 7264 Lighthouse Banks Straight Bass Straight Swan Island Lighthouse Keepers cottage Cape Barren Island Flinders Island Clarke Island Little Swan Island

Swan Island is located off the coast of North East Tasmania in Bass Straight, within viewing distance of Musselroe Bay. There is a guest house on the island, historic walks, great fishing, snorkling, and penguin rookery. There is also the Swan Island Lighthouse. It was built in 1845, and was the first to be established in Bass Strait. The staircase is unique in that it is suspended off the central column where all other Tasmanian Lighthouse staircases are suspended off the tower wall. The lantern revolves in an anti-clockwise direction, and along with a Victorian light are believed to be only ones in the southern hemisphere to turn this way. This aerial photograph shows the lighthouse in the foreground along with the 8 private beaches.
