Troubridge Island Lighthouse Far - SA (PB00 3956)

Keywords: Troubridge Island Lighthouse Far (PB00 3956) Edithbrough Gulf St Vincent

Troubridge Island and Lighthouse sit almost 6 kilometres off Edithburgh, on the Yorke Peninsula, atop a maze of shoals that form the passage between Kangaroo Island and the Yorke Peninsula. The Shoal has officially been the demise of 33 ships, 7 in 1850 alone!!! Interestingly the Lighthouse was finished in 1855 and was the second to be built in South Australia. Despite an earthquake, a fire and constant erosion of an island that continually moves and reshapes itself, the Troubridge Island Lighthouse has up till now survived, but time is running out. The erosion has now reached the base of the lighthouse and in the winter high seas the foundations are threatened. In this image the marker on the left hand side shows where the centre of the island used to be. A few hours after this photograph was taken the ocean was again back to the base of the lighthouse. My father always told me "Time and tide wait for no man" and unfortunately here is the evidence.
