Cape Bailey Lighthouse 1 - NSW (PB00 3914)

Keywords: Cape Bailey Lighthouse 1 (PB00 3914) Kurnell 2231 Sydney Botany Bay

Cape Bailey Lighthouse, built in 1950 sits at the southern side of the entrance to Botany Bay and is about 45 minutes south of Sydney. The lighthouse is only 9.1 metres tall although it sits close to a huge cliff as you can see in this amazing photograph. To achieve this image I stayed nearby overnight and set out for my quarry before sun rise. It is quite a long walk from the car park especially along clifftops in complete darkness with only a torch for company, but the effort was well worth the reward. A slow shutter speed emphasises the distructive forces of the ocean swell smashing against the cliffs since time began. I cannot imagine what it must have been like hundreds of years ago for ships before the advent of these lifesaving devices.
