Richmond Bridge - TAS (PB00 2284)

Keywords: Richmond Bridge Tasmania (PB00 2284) 7025 Hobart Colebrook Pitt Water Cambridge Campania

Nestled into green countryside about 20 minutes from Hobart the quaint village of Richmond is one of Tasmania's earliest settlements. The original buildings date from the 1820s and 1830s and many claim to be the oldest of their kind in all of Australia. Shortly after the initial settlement of Richmond the area became an important military post and an impressive convict jail was constructed. In 1872 a new causeway and road which shortened the trip from Port Arthur to Hobart was constructed which bypassed Richmond. From then on the town has remained virtually undeveloped. The Richmond Bridge pictured here was built in 1823, is Australia's oldest bridge and is still in use today.
