Totem Pole - Tasman Peninsula - TAS (PB 001736)

Keywords: The Totem Pole Close 5 (PB 001736) 7179 Tasman Peninsula Cape Hauy Fortescue Bay Mt Fortescue Tornado Ridge Cape Pillar Mitre Peak The Lanterns The Candlestick The Monument Mill Creek Tasman National Park

I was stunned by the sight of the Totem Pole, a 65m high vertical finger of rock standing at the end of Cape Hauy. I have to say that although the Totem Pole looks as if it will fall over at any given moment, the strength of the pole must be immense to stand in defiance of gravity and the relentless wind and ocean swells. Just the thought of climbing the pole would terrify most climbers but amazingly on the day I was there two people were in fact climbing the Totem Pole. I stood for 2 hours watching in awe as they inched their way to the top. Even to get onto the pole is a challenge, you have to either jump across or somehow sling a rope across to it and then crawl along it upside down... Vertical ascents are not really my thing but watching the climbers was inspiring.
